2016 Hawaii State Doubles Horseshoe Championship

The Hawaii State Horseshoe Pitcher’s Association held its 2016 State Doubles Tournament July 2-3 in Waimanalo on Oahu. Class play was held on July 2 and championship play was held on July 3.

Kona’s Linda Taketa and Tiffany Lastimosa successfully defended the title they won in 2013 and 2015. The Kona Horseshoe Pitchers Club was also represented by Jimmy Taketa and Reg Gomes who finished in third place in Class “C” play.

Greg Cameron Firemen’s Fund events

Join the Greg Cameron Firemen’s Fund and Lavakids for the Greg Cameron Firemen’s Fund 4th annual Biathlon on July 17 at Hapuna Beach State Park. Featured is a 400 meter swim and a 1 mile beach run. Lavakids will feature a Keiki Beach Dash (6 and under) and biathlons for 7-10 (short course) and 11-14 (long course). Free sports physicals

The Big Island Sports Academy and For Hearts and Souls have teamed up to offer free sports physicals to Big Island Keiki.

Dr. Kirk Milhoan will be examining athletes at Panaewa Park on July 14 from 1-6 p.m. and at Konawaena High School on July 15 from 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Dr. Kirk is a pediatric cardiologist and will also be performing free heart screenings as well.

To alleviate early crowding, parents can text or call Thane Milhoan at 938-6805 to reserve a space for their child.

D’s Summer Basketball Jam

D’s Summer Jam, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, will be held from July 23-24 at the Kekuaokalani Gymnasium and outdoor courts.

Age divisions are: 6u, 8u, 10u, 12u, 14u, High School, Women’s Open, Men’s Open, Men’s 6’0 and Under, Men’s Makule (40 & over). Youth entry is free; adult divisions have a $100 entry fee.

The Brantley Center Golf Tournament

The Brantley Center, a services provider for people with disabilities, will host its 38th annual golf tournament at the Big Island Country Club on July 17. The tournament starts at 7:15 a.m. with a shotgun start, two-person best ball modified format. Lunch and Silent Auction will follow at Pu‘uanahulu Community Center. Entry fees are $125 per player for golf, lunch and prizes, including a $10,000 hole-in-one award.

Golfers and non-golfers are invited to contribute to the benefit golf tournament, and various sponsorship levels are available. Organizers also welcome silent auction items, gift certificates and other donations at all price levels, to generate enthusiasm and give everyone a chance to participate.

Kona Japanese Civic Association golf tournament

The KJCA will be holding their 5th annual Golf Tournament at Kona Country Club on July 24 starting at 7:30 a.m. Funds raised will be used to promote Children’s Day (Kodomo No Hi), award two scholarships to graduating seniors, send two students to Shizuoka, Japan on an educational Environmental Cultural Study, and support the Konawaena Middle School Nihon Club.

The Konawaena golf tournament will be held Sunday, July 31 with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

Elite Sports soccer camps

Elite Sports will host three upcoming soccer camps sponsored by Kona AYSO at Old Airport Park .

The 22nd annual Elite Day camp, for campers ages 6-14, will run July 18-22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a cost of $179 per week. Also available is a half day option from 9 a.m. to noon for $125.

The 29th Munchkin Soccer Adventure will be held July 25-29 from 1:30-3 p.m. for 4-6 year olds at a cost of $79 per camper. The Advanced High School Training Camp will be held July 25-29 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. for 14-18 year olds at a cost of $125.

Sea-to-Stars bike race registration now open

Registration is now open for state’s most challenging road bike race, the Sea-to-Stars, which will be held on Aug. 6, starting at Waikoloa Beach and Sports at the Queen’s Shops in Waikoloa. This race takes cyclists from sea level at the Big Island’s Waikoloa Resort area up to an elevation of more than 9,200 feet near the Visitor Information Center on Mauna Kea, where the paved highway ends.
